Authentic BBQ: How to Tell the Real Deal from the Imitators

    Last updated 5 months ago

Fresh, tangy BBQ has been an American favorite for decades. Unfortunately, many have thought that if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing cheaply. Here’s a brief guide to telling the difference between true Southern BBQ and cheap imitators:

    • Smell
The next time you order BBQ, be sure to pay close attention to your senses. For example, you should be able to tell whether or not you’re in an authentic BBQ restaurant from the moment you walk in the door. The light aroma of smoke should fill the air and cause your stomach to growl with anticipation. An imitation BBQ restaurant, however, smells like little more than BBQ sauce and disappointment.

    • Sound
In addition to the growling of eager bellies, you should be able to hear the chopping of fresh meat coming from the kitchen of a real BBQ restaurant. You’ll also hear the chatter and laughter of folks from all over enjoying their food and each other’s company. At an imitation BBQ place, you won’t hear much chopping, but you may hear the incessant beeping of a microwave.

    • Taste
Real Pit BBQ has been meticulously smoked in a pit and then slowly cooked over several hours. When you take your first bite, you should taste the sweet, tender succulence of pit BBQ and get that feeling of never wanting your meal to end. Cheap knockoff BBQ, on the other hand, is tough, bland, and drowning in sauce to hide the lack of flavor.

For authentic Southern pit BBQ that will treat your senses, come by BBQ Post 401. You’ll know you’ve come to the right place once you smell the delicious hint of smoke, hear the fresh meats being chopped, and bite into a juicy BBQ sandwich. Don’t settle for anything but the best restaurant in Fredericksburg. Call ahead to order take out or catering service at (540) 266-3786 to learn more.

We visited BBQ Post 401 Saturday afternoon. Both of us had the BBQ pork sandwich with fries. I really love the fries! Yes, the pork is good, but truth be told I go for the fries! We had been before when they first opened and definitely enjoyed our more recent visit more than the first. They are getting their groove, and it's working! Everything... More

Nice chicken bbq, their white sauce was interesting but I definately recommend the classic red sauce. The star of the show was the slaw which was a solid balance of mild vinegar and cabbage.  Nice beans too. On the expensive side for bbq at USD 10plus a plate but worth it.  Meat comes separate from bread which is an interesting approach. Check out... More
